Today, I visited a main Cape Verdean Independence Celebration held in Rhode Island annually. Being the Pan-Africanist that I am, I managed to maneuver myself into a few heated debates with some of my Cape Verdean brothers/sisters[1] about: a) those of their community who deny their Africaness while fraudulently attempting to identify as “Portuguese”, and b) whether or not there is a continued need for Cape Verde to liberate itself from a strengthening Portuguese — and now Chinese — economic hegemony.
